Wishing You A Great and Memorable Honeymoon!

Are you like a few other couples who think about the honeymoon last. When we had our wedding the honeymoon was top on the agenda. I see the honeymoon as a way of rewarding yourself. I have noticed that many couples worry more about the wedding venue than the honeymoon destination. Both are very important aspects of your wedding and non of them should be treated as more important than the other.

You know I was talking to an older couple than us (thats is my wife and i) whose wedding was in the mid-90s in Harare, Zimbabwe. One thing i took away from the discussion with them was just how memorable their honeymoon was. Even though by today's standards you and i can laugh about it, back then it made their day. It was really something. It remained sticky for the rest of their lives. In fact this couple's honeymoon was in stages, soon after the wedding reception they checked into Elizabeth Hotel. Now you wouldn't like the state of Elizabeth Hotel today. I think it also was known as Hotel Liz or Liz Hotel something like that. It's actually at the corner of Robert Mugabe and L. Takawira in Harare now almost like "down-town" Harare.

But the point is their honeymoon was memorable. The following morning i think they said they took off for the Eastern Highlands.

Here are some tips as you work-out your honeymoon get-away;

  • Research, research, research. No guesses get the facts about the destination and know what you are getting into.
  • Plan your transportation - drive or fly (including local movements)
  • Length of stay
  • Accomodation
  • Fees - entry, tooll gates, etc
  • Decide if you will get gifts for friends and relatives e.g curios, post cards, T-Shirts etc
If you are considering Zimbabwe's beautiful resorts as part of your honeymoon i have a few suggestions below (you may also even use them for your wedding as a wedding venue if you like):

Would Tiger Bay be a good Zimbabwe honeymoon candidate for you?

When we had our Zimbabwe wedding because of our budget we were mostly focused on Zimbabwe honeymoon destinations. We eventually flew to Victoria Falls ( didn't want the trouble of driving that long distance).

It was such a magnificent experience staying at the Kingdom Hotel Victoria  Falls the first 2 or so nights and them moving out into a lodge for the reminder of the time.

I realize that Zimbabwe has a lot of places to offer for a unique honeymoon. You just need to search and get that unique deal. Remember thousands of tourists come to these places to see what we have, something we ourselves never fully exploit.

There is place called Tiger Bay Resort in the Kariba area. A company called Club 52 is currently offering a Tiger Bay Resort weekend excursion. They will transfer you from Kariba mainland by boat at $60.00 per person and take you to the banks of the Ume River were the resort is located.

Your accommodation will cost an additional $180 per night inclusive of three meals per day, some drinks, and two activities per person which might be a game drive, a cruise, fishing or bush dinner. This is sure a place to take your camera with you for a memorable honeymoon.

Email or call [+27 (0)21 683 6576] Club 52 for further and most up-to-date information (mention Zimbridal).

As you plan your wedding, keep a diary of honeymoon possibilities. Track changes and developments at your destination of choice. Did you know you can get a sweet discount by negotiating on the basis of being honeymooners. People generally have a soft spot for honeymoon couples!

Honeymoon overnighting: Crown Plaza Monomutapa
When we had our wedding after a tiring day we soon disappeared to our overnight hotel before jumping on a flight out of Harare the following morning. To add to the fun, not so many people knew where we would spend the night at, only a couple of friends knew. If you are wedding in Harare, Crown Plaza Monomutapa is a great overnight stop before your final honeymoon destination. The hotel is a popular icon in Harare with magnificent views of the park and the city lights at night. all in all its got 203 rooms, 1 presidential suite, 1 paraplegic room, 9 luxurious suites, 37 king leisure rooms and 156 standard rooms.
If you should go by this approach you my even consider a honeymoon suite which is currently Z$2.3billion[USD40.00] and Z$350million [USD7.00]/person for breakfast. The ordinary room double rate is currently Z$1.2billion [USD20.00] and breakfast is the same as the honeymoon suite package.

Would You have Your Honeymoon in Vumba?
The honeymoon is meant to be an icing on your wedding. That time to escape the stress and pressure of wedding guests, a time for a toast with your life partner to celebrate your achievements in the last few months of serious planning. Now many people would preferably travel for their honeymoon outside of Zimbabwe, but we are thinking about those abroad coming home to wed, probably they would just love to do it all here.
In your considerations and search for an excellent honeymoon destination Eden Lodge might be worth pursuing. It's located 18km from Mutare [ you know Mutare is 285km from Harare]. They are currently running an Easter special with the prices listed below. We have not personally set foot there neither have we been able to get any review from anybody who has been there before. The following zim dollar rates are calculated at the USD rate of 40million to one Z$ [ todays language in Zim];
Family Room - Z$220million [USD5.50]
Honeymoon suite - Z$200million [USD5.00]
Standard Double Room - Z$190million [USD4.75]
Single Room - Z$180million [USD4.50]
These rates exclude breakfast which costs Z$150million [USD3.75], Lunch Z$250million [USD6.25] and dinner also at USD6.25 per person. The rates are also strictly for the Easter season, please contact them for rates outside this period.
We are not sure to what extent you can judge Eden Lodge using the rates above. We have a feeling they are trying to get customers hooked. So long as they deliver a resonable service at that price we don't mind even if one gets hooked. If you should go there, please let us know how it was.

A little on the anatomy of a honeymoon

This is good topic to start by in a day isn’t it… honeymoon. Often people equate other people who are lackadaisical to people on a honeymoon just because there is something about a honeymoon. Something mesmerizing and really relaxing.

Last night we were just debating where really should people on a honeymoon go? What is the purpose of a honeymoon and how much should one spend on a honeymoon. We went over to Victoria Falls for our honeymoon and it was good that there weren’t too many people which gave us a real lovely time to ourselves. In fact soon after the wedding, we resisted some overtures from family members to tie us down to their plans because we had already made our gate-away plans in private in advance. In Victoria Falls we spent some nights at Kingdom Hotel before moving on to a smaller lodge for the remainder of the time. Kingdom hotel is really lovely and worth considering if your plan is not to leave the country. In fact it’s only about 400m from the falls through a back way in the garden. Evening walks are also beautiful cause of the lights and also the thunder of the falls in the distance…

Firstly, a honeymoon is an opportunity for the fresh couple to get away from it all, the months or even years of preparing for their special day, just to celebrate their breakthrough. Secondly, this is an opportunity for a MARRIED couple to explore one another intimately. During this time phones are switched off and it becomes like it’s only the two of you the world-over. However legend has it that the honeymoon was used in Victorian times as an opportunity for the couple to make their first baby, perhaps before the man returned to the battlefield… well apparently tradition has carried on and certainly and effectively evolved!

Approaches sometimes differ, but we have always thought that budget wise, the honeymoon should get its fair share. It is time to relax and enjoy and as such it must be adequately financed for it to effectively serve its purpose. Usually on a honeymoon, you need to spend more time with one another and the best way to secure this arrangement is to avoid self catering lodges and such other arrangements. Let someone do it for you and you focus on one another and other activities such a game drive, boat ride, sunset cruise, bungee jumping amongst a whole host of other things to do. But again, this is never a rule, go by what both of you are comfortable with.

So today, we throw our weight on Kingdom Hotel, Victoria Falls because we really enjoyed their hospitality. It’s really cool. However, you might want to check the prices for meals because at that time it was a bit on the high side and we believe nothing much has changed since… in fact things have gone up higher. The service was also good from the hotel staff, nothing beats being treated like a king and queen on your honeymoon even if these guys don’t know it. Oh they also got a hair saloon within the hotel in case, for ladies, you want to get your wedding hairdo undone. The best way to get there is to fly, this we recommend. It’s pretty affordable and it’s only 55 minutes on the bigger plane. In fact when we went there, it was cheaper to fly than to drive.
